Dragon Marks Dzi

Rather than representing a specific symbol, dragon marks are certain types of markings found on certain Dzi beads. These marks occur when layers of agate or chalcedony, from which the Dzi bead is carved, refuse to accept the etching material used for the bead’s symbols. The areas that resist etching are left without a defined design, creating what is known as dragon marks.

The agate that rejects the etching material typically appears light gray or white. Legend has it that dragon marks occur when a dragon, in search of Dzi beads, accidentally claws into a bead or two. Any Dzi bead marked by a dragon is believed to have caught the dragon’s attention but was ultimately dropped or discarded because it was deemed imperfect by the dragon’s standards.

While a Dzi bead with dragon marks carries the energy of the dragon, it does not grant mastery over a dragon. Only a “Dragon Dzi Bead” itself is said to have the power to master a dragon.
